BIO-FINISHER™ TECHNICAL BULLETIN
The Bio-Finisher™ is relatively new to orthodontics. However, its basic design is like the Bionator I to open the bite, a standard for many years in A-P correction. The Bio-Finisher does not take the place of the Bionator, but can be used for the finishing of TMJ or orthodontic cases.
Prior to Bio-Finisher treatment, it is crucial to properly prepare the arches. Teeth with tight contacts will not erupt well so contacts between the posterior teeth must be opened up. Second molar extraction may allow posterior drift and some loosening of the contacts. Widening and lengthening of the arch to uncrowd the teeth will also help break contacts. Therefore, an appliance is sometimes necessary to complete arch preparation.
There are several appliances used to treat the arches before the Bio-Finisher. A
Sagittal appliance is often prescribed on the upper arch. On the lower arch, the buccal
Sagittal or similar appliance, is often preferred. The acrylic is on the buccal side of the arch to better utilize the lingual undercuts and to create more tongue room.
The Bio-Finisher can be prescribed upon completion of this phase of treatment. The basic Bio-Finisher, developed by Dr. Jack Lynn, performs the same as a Bionator but hastens vertical development where desired in the upper and lower bicuspid and first molar area.
The major feature of the Bio-Finisher that enhances vertical development is a buccal rake on each side of the appliance. The heavy wire rake extends through the arches approximately 3.0 mm beyond the buccal surface of the posterior teeth. Attached to the rake are small hooks (with rounded ends bent back toward the arch for patient comfort) to which elastics are attached.
Brackets are placed on the teeth needing vertical development. The Bio-Finisher is designed with the hooks opposite the bracketed teeth and in line with the long axis of the tooth. Elastics...........For a complete free technical bulletin call our Customer Service at
