CONSTRUCTION BITE FOR A SAGITTAL

This is the most important step in your office procedure to insure a properly constructed functional appliance.  It is essential that you have:

  1. A Hanau hot water heater with water at 139 degrees fahrenheit.

  2. Modern materials Mfg. Co. Pink Base Plate Wax.

Procedure

  1. For practice without a wax bite, have the patient open and close slowly into their normal centric occlusion.

  2. Warm the wax in the Hanau hot water heater at 139 degrees fahrenheit.

  3. Fold the wax as shown to the left:

  4. Place the wax on the upper posterior teeth.  Keep the wax off of the anterior teeth.  So you can see the teeth clearly during the taking of the wax bite.

  5. Have the patient close slowly until there is a 1.5 to 2 mm space between the posterior teeth.  Since you cannot see the posterior space, you need to watch the anterior overbite.

  6. Remove the wax bite from the mouth.

  7. Chill the wax in cold water.

  8. cut off the excess wax with scissors.

  9. Place the wax between the models and look to see that you have taken a good construction bite.

Note The George Gauge should no be used in taking a construction bite for a Sagittal appliance.
