Appliance Benefits
The UltraBlock is a maxillary appliance that offers several benefits:
- Treatment time is greatly reduced over the use of
Sagittal and Bionator appliances.
- Corrects open bites.
- It correctly positions the TMJ and mandible.
- It can develop the maxilla in transverse/sagittal
directions.
- It corrects facial asymmetry.
- It allows the first permanent molars to erupt to
proper vertical, thus eliminating deep bites quickly.
- The occlusal plane is leveled as the alveolar
vertical height of the buccal segments of both jaws increase.
- Overjets are corrected as the mandible is relocated
forward.
- Improved premaxillary and bimaxillary profiles.
- Mild to moderate lower anterior crowding is
corrected.
Disadvantages
The doctor may need to monitor the progress of the UltraBlock a little
more closely than other appliances since there are several changes taking
place at the same time. The sequence of treatment must also be carefully
followed. Patients will notice some impaired speech for a short time.
Lab Requirements
Mount case and adjust for correction of planes. Create bite on a
Denar/Witzig articulator and adjust to the correct Gelb 4/7 position. Send
to Johns Dental for appliance fabrication along with a set of good working
models. |

Appliance Design
The basic design covers the occlusal surface of the maxillary first and
second primary molars and has a ramp to reposition the mandible forward as
determined from the Denar-Witzig Articulator. Variations are achieved by
adding expansion Screws for Sagittal or Transverse design. When the first
permanent molars are not covered, the molars erupt and eliminate a deep
bite.
This appliance can develop the maxilla by incorporating
a Sagittal or Transverse configuration into its basic design. Thus, it has
all the advantages of the Sagittal, Transverse, Orthopedic Corrector, plus
it is much faster. Since only one appliance is used, rather than several
appliances, there is better compliance of the patient, while achieving faster and more controlled results.
Additionally, it can be fixed into place by bonding above the adams clasps to
the primary teeth and removed weekly by the dentist for cleaning purposes.
Compliance is improved as well as learning to eat with the appliance. |

The UltraBlock, shown here on a permanent dentition model, also has
applications for mixed dentition treatment. The incline is used here to
bring the mandible forward and the expansion screws were added to achieve
additional arch width.
Appliance Variations
Basic UltraBlock- Without expansion screws
Molars covered- This is done to prevent eruption because of a mild
overbite.
Molars uncovered- This version is used for a deep bite.
Transverse UltraBlock- Expansion screws are added to the basic
UltraBlock style. Options with molars covered and uncovered are also
available.
Sagittal UltraBlock- Two or three sagittal screws are used for
gaining additional arch length/width. Options with molars covered and
uncovered are also available. |
