Upper
The Witzig Upper Splint is a Phase II treatment splint and is used to support the joint while in its corrected position. It is worn when lower incisor removal is the chosen treatment method. A lower crowded incisor is removed and the remaining anterior teeth (cuspid to cuspid) are bracketed. The dentition is rounded into a smaller arch. This eliminates the incisal misguidance.
Lower
The Witzig Lower Splint (shown below) is a splint with heavy indexing to maintain the patient’s proper bite. This splint consists of high buccal and lingual walls to prevent lateral excursions and maintain hinge-axis occlusion. Anterior acrylic has been eliminated to facilitate speech and increase wearing comfort for the patient.
The appliance should remain in place for three to six months. This splint should be worn 24/7 and must not be removed while eating. For more information about the Witzig Splint, call for our free Splint brochure.
