The Fan appliance expands primarily in the anterior region and is more commonly used to correct a V-shaped arch. The appliance name is derived from the “fan” motion of the expansion. The hinge in the posterior limits the posterior arch width increase. We can fabricate the appliance in a bonded or banded configuration, or in a fixed or removable design with palatal acrylic. Occlusal pads can also be incorporated into the removable appliance. Reverse fan appliance designs (with the hinge in the anterior) are also available.
